CHAPTER TWELVE
Tai wakes early the next day, to sunlight filtered around the curtains and to Ollie warm with sleep beside him. The sight and the recollections that come with it are almost unbearably lovely—they swell in Tai’s chest. He can taste Ollie on his lips.
He can’t afford to get used to this. They agreed. Just while we’re on tour. Tai hasn’t spent five years building a family only to ruin it because his irresistibly attractive best friend is exploring his sexuality. Doing this only makes sense if they can get back to the life they’ve spent so long creating. That life matters. It matters more than sex.
Tai refuses to fool himself. Letting go of this thing between them will be at least as terrible as he imagines. But when he looks at Ollie curled softly in his bed, he knows he’s already all in. However much this will ache in the future, he’s not about to give up the five and a half weeks stretching ahead of them. They get to enjoy this. It could be incredible. Tai can handle everything else later.
Under the sheets, he rubs his feet together, an old comfort. His feet are smooth but not soft, tough after hours spent walking up and down rough sand and clambering across rocks. He moves his toes to tuck them beneath Ollie’s ankle and drops back into sleep.
When he wakes a second time, Ollie’s eyes are open. They’re warm as they rest on Tai, gray-blue like the sky outside.
“You know what I was just thinking?” Ollie says. His voice sounds loud, breaking into the silence of the morning.
“Do I need to worry?” Tai says, though he could never really worry when Ollie’s gaze is so sweet on him.
Ollie shakes his head. His lips are pressed together as though he’s holding onto a smile. “I was thinking that they do room service here. There’s absolutely nothing we need to do all day. We could get breakfast in bed and stay here. Forget about everything else for a while.” Ollie’s bites his lip but his eyes are wide, hopeful and teasing. It’s enough to make Tai kiss him and press him into the mattress greedily.
* * *
The postcard on the bed is a picture of Bells Beach at sunrise. Tai saw Ollie grab it in one of the convenience stores in town while they were buying other essentials. It shows a little crescent of golden cliff curved around the big, barreling southern ocean surf.
Ollie writes in his neat script. Tai rolls over and hooks his chin over Ollie’s shoulder to read. He breathes Ollie in.
There’s no point in flying home between tour stops when the surf league has the competitions bunched together in Australia like this. Instead, they’ve been waiting for the next round of the competition, surfing a lot and not sightseeing even a little, exploring one another’s bodies for almost two weeks. Two weeks of Ollie inviting him to their room after dinner with a quick-eyed smirk only Tai
